May Newsletter from the Yarmouth Town Libraries

From the Director:Ah, the lovely month of May. It is a special reawakening this year, as more of us are vaccinated and can begin to think about a better future outside and even with friends and family. Given our year of isolation, certainly our spring cleaning is done and we can move to the great outdoors for some carefully-planned activities. We are working with Cape Cod Salties again this month, to bring you a spirited author event on Wednesday evening, May 5. New York Times bestselling Massachusetts author and motivational speaker Michael Tougias should be a not-to-be-missed Zoom event to get our hearts and minds back outdoors in New England. Extra bonus: throughout the book, Mike reminds us of great literature he read as a baby boomer kid growing up in western Mass. -Jane Cain Library Director

A Spring message from Youth Services:Congratulations to all! We made it through a pretty tough year in spite of challenges we never imagined. It has been a wonderful opportunity to polish our creative skills. Storytimes don’t look the same—Ms. Mindy Herington has given so much of herself to provide weekly virtual storytimes, and in the process, becoming a videographer and social media producer. If you would like another chance to see recordings of Ms. Mindy’s storytimes, send us an email or give us a call and we will gladly send you the link to our YouTube channel. Take and Make Kits have flowed out of the library for many months, via curbside pickup, at both library locations. Every week, we researched themes, developed, designed and packaged kits, craft materials, supplemental literacy activities, and resources. We distributed 25-30 kits every week. Thank you to everyone who provided pictures of their projects for our social media during the past several months. Now, we look forward to working on some spring and summer activities.

Mystery Book Club on Zoom Thursday, May 13, 6:00 p.m.This month we will discuss The Red House Mystery by A. A. Milne. Best known as the creator of Winnie-the-Pooh, Milne takes readers to the Red House, a comfortable residence in the placid English countryside that is the bachelor home of Mr. Mark Ablett. While visiting this cozy retreat, amateur detective Anthony Gillingham and his chum, Bill Beverley, investigate their genial host's disappearance and its connection with a mysterious shooting. Between games of billiards and bowls, the taking of tea, and other genteel pursuits, Gillingham and Beverley explore the possibilities in a light-hearted series of capers involving secret passageways, underwater evidence, and other atmospheric devices. Copies of the book are available at both libraries; call to set up a pick-up time. You can also check out the ebook or audiobook from Hoopla with no wait or the ebook from Overdrive/Libby with your CLAMS card. Book Discussion Group on ZoomThursday, May 27, 6:30 p.m. This month we will be discussing Go Tell It On the Mountain by James Baldwin. Originally published in 1953, James Baldwin's first major work is based in part on his own childhood in Harlem. With lyrical precision, psychological directness, resonating symbolic power, and a rage that is at once unrelenting and compassionate, Baldwin chronicles a fourteen-year-old boy's discovery of the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a Pentecostal storefront church in Harlem. Baldwin's rendering of his protagonist's spiritual, sexual, and moral struggle toward self-invention opened new possibilities in the American language and in the way Americans understood themselves. Copies of the book are available at both libraries; call to set up a pick-up time. You can also read the ebook or listen to the audiobook on Overdrive/Libby through CLAMS or another consortium in Massachusetts with your CLAMS card. Please email ckaufmann@clamsnet.org or call the library at 508-760-4820 to register to receive a Zoom link or with any questions. If you need Zoom assistance, please call 508-258-9496 or email ckaufmann@clamsnet.org to set up a troubleshooting session.

Researching your Family History?Did you know there are lots of FREE options for genealogical research? 1. During the pandemic, ProQuest has allowed free remote access to Ancestry – here is the URL for connection and you can search from the comfort of your home computer:
Type in your Yarmouth library card number, and the PIN is typically the last 4 digits of that number - no spaces. If you have trouble, or don’t have an active card, call the library: 508-760-4820 and we can see if there is an issue with the card # or set up an account for you and you can pick up your card through our curbside pickup services.
2. You can get to the Yarmouth Register and Barnstable Patriot historical archives databases through the Sturgis Library, any Dennis Library and the Yarmouth Town Libraries: Go to: www.yarmouthlibraries.org/newspapers and scroll down to about the middle over to the right and click on the Register and Patriot button, or click here (and bookmark it!) :
3. You can get to HeritageQuest at no cost - any time, from anywhere, through the library website: yarmouthlibraries.org/ebranch/databases – you’ll get to a GALE DATABASES page that has a patchwork quilt of boxes to click on – find the one that says HeritageQuest. These databases are made available through the State Board of Library Commissioners (and your tax dollars.)
4. You can get to Fold3 (also a ProQuest product, contains great military records - and it has remote access all the time, not just during the pandemic) by looking at yarmouthlibraris.org/resources/genealogy and scroll down about ½ way to Fold3 on right. Funded by our Library Associations.
5. Free Genealogy website: familysearch.com – sponsored by the Mormon church – create a free account for unlimited access to tons of records FOR FREE.
