From the DirectorIn like a lion, out like a lamb…who knows what weather we’ll have this March! It is a nice long month of winter turning into spring, and that’s okay. The closer to warm weather, the closer to more time outside in the fresh ocean breeze. My thanks to all Library staff who helped make our time at this year’s first-ever Yarmouth Winter Carnival such fun. Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth on that cold and windy Saturday afternoon for some winter fun with Ms. Mindy the Yeti, Ms. Diana, our snow princess, and the rest of us. By the way, there were 167 snowballs in the jar, for those of you who entered the guessing contest. -Jane Cain Library Director

Author Talk Flower Diary: In Which Mary Hiester Reid Paints, Travels, Marries, and Opens a Door by Molly PeacockTuesday, March 1, 7:00 p.m. on Zoom Learn the history of neglected painter Mary Hiester Reid, a trailblazing artist who refused to choose between marriage and a career. After she married fellow artist George Reid, Mary returned with him to his home country of Canada. There she created over 300 stunning still life and landscape paintings, inhabiting a rich, if sometimes difficult, marriage, coping with a younger rival, exhibiting internationally, and becoming well-reviewed. Reid studied in Paris, traveled in Spain, and divided her time between Canada and the United States where she lived among America’s Arts and Crafts movement titans. She left few written records; rather, her art became her diary and Flower Diary unfolds with an artwork for each episode of her life. Registration is required. Sign up at the Calendar of Events at www.yarmouthlibraries.org, or call the library at (508) 760-4820, and we will send you a Zoom link.

Thanks to Frances Perkins: Fighter for Workers’ Rights by Deborah Hopkinson; illustrated by Kristy CaldwellAmerican workers have much to be thankful for due to the advocacy of Frances Perkins in the early 1900s. Her contributions to early labor movements began with the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in 1911. Soon after witnessing the tragedy that claimed the lives of 146 people, Perkins fought for workers’ rights and joined a safety committee to ensure better conditions for workers. Perkins became the first woman appointed to a presidential cabinet when President Franklin D. Roosevelt named her Secretary of Labor, a position she held for 12 years. Grades 1-4 JB PERKINS
