May Newsletter from the Yarmouth Town Libraries

From the DirectorMay is one of my favorite months. Flowers, green grass, the trees are leafing out…such good, new life around us brings hope and happiness. Saturday hours are rolling along at the West Yarmouth Library location, and May 22 will be the end of Sunday hours at our South Yarmouth Library location – until after Labor Day. Greek philosopher Heraclitus is credited with that saying: “the only [thing] constant is change” and that one never steps in the same stream twice. Profound, indeed. We had good fortune at this year’s Spring Town Meeting, held on April 26, that two Library capital requests were approved. We’ll be able to update our main doors – both in need of upgrades – and move ahead on the Community Needs Assessment phase of study for library facility and service improvements. We thank the community for this support. This newsletter presents some upcoming springy events and learning opportunities for all. Come visit and see what you can find. -Jane Cain Library Director

Book Discussion Group The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William KamkwambaTuesday, May 24, 6:00 p.m. on Zoom Thursday, May 26, 10:30 a.m. at West Yarmouth Library & on Zoom Join us for either the evening or morning book discussion groups as we discuss The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope, by William Kamkwamba. William was born in Malawi, a country where magic ruled and modern science was mystery. But William had read about windmills, and he dreamed of building one that would bring electricity and running water to his small village. With once-forgotten science textbooks, some scrap metal, tractor parts, and bicycle halves, and lots of curiosity and determination, he embarked on a daring plan to forge an unlikely contraption and small miracle that would change the lives around him.
Copies of the book are available at both libraries. You can also read or listen to the book online on Overdrive/Libby through CLAMS or another consortium in Massachusetts with your CLAMS card. Please email ckaufmann@clamsnet.org or call the library at 508-760-4820 to register to receive a Zoom link or with any questions. If you need Zoom help, please call 508-760-4820 to set up a troubleshooting session or if you need any other assistance.

Staff Pick There is Nothing For You Here by Fiona HillFrom northern England’s coal mines to the spotlight on the national stage in Trump's 2019 impeachment trial, Fiona Hill has written a memoir that is ultimately a political prescription for helping us prepare for a better future. Through her hard-won educational opportunities, she had the ability to study economic hardships, not only in the UK but also in Russia and the US. She also focuses on her fight against classism, sexism, workplace misogyny, and the gender wage gap. The author follows up with recommendations for “transformational placemaking,” to reinvigorate areas that have lost industry and hope, so that the best and brightest in that area don’t have to leave to find opportunities. Available in CLAMS, eAudio, eBook, and MP3-CD

Staff Pick for Children I Begin with Spring: the Life and Seasons of Henry David Thoreau by Julie Dunlap Illustrations by Megan BarattaHenry David Thoreau, more commonly known for his literary works, is revealed to be a multi-layered gentleman in this refreshing biography. Written in descriptive prose and beautifully illustrated, and offering a list of primary resources, this is an exploration of the convergence of Thoreau's philosophy and naturalist lifestyle. Readers will not only come to appreciate, as Thoreau did, the beauty in nature and simplicity, but feel inspired to treat the earth and its inhabitants with kindness as well.

Art Wall in MayThe May artist on display at the South Yarmouth Library is Jan Darcy. Growing up, she traveled to Barnstable village from DC every summer to visit grandparents for a week or two. Now that she lives on the Cape, Jan gets to enjoy the ocean, the waves, and all the natural beauty of this special place. If she could, she would paint everything in sight because painting "allows you to dwell in the space and beauty you see around you."
