July News from the Yarmouth Town Libraries

From the DirectorWhat a whirlwind time this is. Many of us from the Library, along with Library Board members, set up an information table at the June home games of the YD Red Sox, at the DY High School ball field. We had such fun meeting new people and sharing news about our upcoming summer reading activities and information about library services. We thank everyone who stopped by our table and played Flying Fish for fun and rewards. Our Youth Service folks have taken to the streets and visited with dozens of classrooms at each of the Yarmouth schools – promoting summer reading, visiting with teachers, and getting to know the children. In early June, Library Board member George Bovino and I participated in Career Day at the Mattacheese Middle School. We talked to 5 groups of 6th and 7th graders on the joy of Librarianship and School Administration. It doesn’t get much better than that. -Jane Cain Library Director

Monthly Book Discussion Group Bruno, Chief of Police by Martin WalkerTuesday, July 26 10:30 AM: Morning Group meets in-person at West Yarmouth Library and via Zoom 6:00 PM: Evening Group meets via Zoom
Bruno, a policeman in a small village in the South of France, is a former soldier who has embraced the pleasures and slow rhythms of country life. The murder of an elderly North African who fought in the French army changes all that and Bruno must balance his beloved routines--living in his restored shepherd's cottage, shopping at the local market, drinking wine, strolling the countryside--with a politically delicate investigation.
Copies of the book are available at both libraries. You can also listen to the audiobook on the Hoopla app or read the ebook on Overdrive/Libby through CLAMS or another consortium in Massachusetts with your CLAMS card. Staff Pick: Non-Fiction Listen: How Evelyn Glennie, a Deaf Girl, Changed Percussion by Shannon Stocker; illustrated by Devon HolzwarthA gorgeous and empowering picture book biography about Evelyn Glennie, a deaf woman, who became the first full-time solo percussionist in the world. "No. You can't," people said. But Evelyn knew she could. From the moment Evelyn Glennie heard her first note, music held her heart. She played the piano by ear at age eight, and the clarinet by age ten. The nerves in her ears began to deteriorate, and Evelyn was told that, as a deaf girl, she could never be a musician. What sounds Evelyn couldn't hear with her ears, though, she could feel resonate through her body as if she, herself, were a drum. Evelyn Glennie had learned how to listen in a new way. And soon, the world was listening too. PreK-Grade 3
