From the DirectorIn May our busy Youth Services team got even busier traveling from school to school to introduce students to our plans for Summer Reading with the theme, “Finding Your Voice.” Motivation for all ages, if you ask me. The Library Planning Committee had a chance to speak before the Board of Selectmen on May 23, to update our Town leaders on planning efforts now that a grant round for library construction has been announced. Please plan to join us on Thursday, June 8, at 6:00 p.m., for a Listening Session at the South Yarmouth Library, where we’ll continue a community discussion to gather your thoughts on library services in the foreseeable future. What’s working? What can we fix? What do you need and why do you come to the Library? Bring a friend or neighbor, of course. -Jane Cain Library Director

Staff Picks Diary of a Bookseller by Shaun BynthellOne day last month, a library user returned this book when I was at the front desk. It seemed intriguing, So I checked it out and started reading it. Shaun Bythell is a veteran used book store owner in Scotland, and he started taking notes on interesting things that happen and people he encounters in his daily book trade business. This became a Diary, and the next edition is entitled Confessions of a Bookseller, and now, I am waiting to get the next edition through interlibrary loan. The books are charming, erudite and a bit cheeky all at the same time. Laugh-out-loud entertaining and a quick read, too. Would recommend. - jc

Becoming Charley by Kelly DiPucchio, Illustrated by Loveis WiseConvention is upended in this striking tale of individuality and change. “Black. Orange. This. Not that.” From the day they are hatched, young caterpillars are informed by their butterfly guardians how to think and how to act. All obey except for Charley. While the others eat ceaselessly, Charley looks up into the canopy and gazes at the trees and clouds and stars. While the others dream of becoming butterflies, Charley imagines what it would be like to be a deer or a waterfall. At last, the day comes for all caterpillars to form their chrysalises, and Charley worries. But while inside, the wayward caterpillar imagines far more than just orange and black, so that when at last the new butterflies emerge, the protagonist’s wings reflect “everything Charley had ever loved.” © Kirkus Reviews 2023 J Pic DiP For 3 to 7 year-olds

Yarmouth Library Knitters Donate to UkraineThere is a group of women who gather at the South Yarmouth Library on Wednesday evenings and on Friday mornings most weeks, to knit. All ages and all skill levels work together for a couple of hours learning new skills and working on a variety of projects. Alice (Bo) Bowen, who many of you know, organizes the group. During the month of March, they take on a volunteer project. This year, working with lots of donated yarn and an enthusiastic sense of purpose, they knit dozens of afghans, sweaters, hats and booties, mostly all with the familiar yellow, white and blue of the Ukrainian flag. In early June three large reusable shopping bags will be delivered to the Ukrainian Church in Jamaica Plain to be shipped overseas. Makes you proud to be involved with such an important effort. (Pictured: South Yarmouth Library knitters, led by Alice (Bo) Bowen, on left, and a sampling of their many baby items for donation to Ukraine.)
