March Newsletter from the Yarmouth Town Libraries

From the Director:

March is a month with such potential! Here’s hoping spring arrives early on Cape Cod and decides to stay. At the end of the month, watch for the kick-off of this year’s Yarmouth Reads 2019 series of programs, focused on the book, The Island of Worthy Boys, by Massachusetts author Connie Hertzberg Mayo – on Sunday, March 31, at 1 p.m. My thanks to the hard-working Library Board members, for their efforts in putting together this year’s series of programs.

Yarmouth Reads 2019
Kick-off Event at
the Cultural Center of Cape Cod:
The Island of Worthy Boys

Sunday March 31, 2:00 p.m.
The Cultural Center of Cape Cod

It is good to read together. This year’s fiction selection for Yarmouth Reads 2019 is a story of turn-of-the-twentieth-century Boston when young boys grew up too fast and sometimes needed shelter from the law and from society. At this year’s kick-off event, meet the author and get some questions answered. Hear about the many programs planned throughout April, May and June. Books are available on loan from the Library – and will be for sale at a discounted price. See you at the Kick-off!

Recommendation Made to the Finance Committee and the Board of Selectmen by the Library Study
Ad Hoc Committee in January

A large group of library supporters turned out to hear the recommendation to the Yarmouth Board of Selectmen by the Library Study Committee that, since 2015, has been studying local, regional and national data, as well as previous needs and facilities assessment reports. After consultation with Johnson Roberts Associates of Somerville, MA, the group decided unanimously to recommend,

“… that we accept the facts presented that the Town of Yarmouth needs to move forward in an effort to increase its library capacity and centralize its service location to maximize resources and respond to the deficiencies identified in our report.”

Both the Finance Committee and the Board of Selectmen offered questions and discussion, and ultimately, supported the recommendation of the group. The next step for the community leaders is to develop informational opportunities and further exploration of the issues, to garner community consensus on how best to proceed.

There is support for the establishment of a new volunteer planning committee with a new charge to continue the project.
